JD Sports senior independent director Kath Smith will leave the board on 19 January 2027 after more than seven years of service, prompting an independent recruitment process to find her successor. Smith joined the sportswear group in May 2019 and was appointed senior independent director and designated workforce engagement non‑executive director in February 2022, where she helped drive board leadership changes. She also acted as interim chief executive from May to September 2022 following the exit of former executive chairman Peter Cowgill, and later led the search for JD Sports’ new chairman, Peter Agnefjäll, who assumed the role on 1 September. During her tenure Smith sat on the audit and risk, nominations and ESG committees and supported employee engagement and inclusion initiatives. Her previous senior roles at Adidas, Reebok and The North Face were noted, and chief executive Régis Schultz thanked her for her knowledge of the retailer’s brand partners and for strengthening its wider proposition.
