Makro specials this week: the Wednesday catalogue

Makro is one of the easier South African catalogues to set your watch by. The editions we hold usually start on a Wednesday, and the current Makro Specials runs from 21 October to 3 November 2026 across 12 pages. Flip through it and you will see a very mixed trolley: boerewors, butter, cheese, milk and chocolate on the early pages, then handwash and dishwashing liquid, then soundbars, a smartwatch, a floor fan, an air fryer, a washing machine and a fridge. That spread is the whole point of the place. It is a warehouse-style store where the weekly shop and the occasional appliance sit under one roof.

Two longer-running editions sit beside it. A Makro Vodacom catalogue runs from 7 October to 2 November 2026 (12 pages), and a More4less edition covers 27 July to 25 October 2026 (21 pages). So when you search for the Makro catalogue 2026, you may be looking at three overlapping documents, not one. Check the dates on the cover before you drive out.

The Makro card: you cannot just walk in and buy

The question people type is "makro how to get a card", and it is a fair one. According to Wikipedia's entry on the company, shoppers need a free Makro card to buy in store or online. We could not open the retailer's own help pages, which sit behind a bot check, so we cannot quote the exact sign-up steps or documents. What we can say is that the card is a membership gate rather than a points scheme, and we found no evidence of a Makro points programme such as those at the big supermarket groups. Makro return policy: what the public record shows

"Makro return policy without receipt" and "makro return policy on appliances" are both live searches, which tells you shoppers worry about this. The official policy page was not reachable for us, so treat the following as a pointer and not a promise. In a 2025 customer-service reply published on Hellopeter, Makro's social media team said that returns logged more than 14 days after the delivery date would not be refunded, that the item must be unused and in its original packaging, and that returns are logged through the online profile or the Makro Shopping App. That reply concerned an online order.

Separately, the Consumer Protection Act gives you rights when goods are faulty, whatever a shop notice says. The Act is administered by the National Consumer Commission. Keep your slip or order confirmation, and photograph the fault before you go back to the store.

Opening hours, Sunday trading and delivery questions

Searches such as "when does Makro close" and "when does Makro close on Sunday" show that people plan around the clock. We could not read the hours on the official site, and hours differ between stores, so we will not print a time that might send you to a locked door. Look up your nearest branch on makro.co.za, or call it. The same goes for "does Makro deliver" and "does Makro accept Payflex": both are real questions, but we found no official page we could open that answers them, so check at checkout.

What we can confirm from Wikipedia is the digital timeline: an online store launched in 2014, a standalone shopping app followed in July 2022, and a Makro Business site for trade customers arrived in 2023. The online side also hosts third-party sellers, so read who is selling an item before you order it.

Who owns Makro and how big it is

Makro South Africa began in 1971 in Germiston, according to Wikipedia. Massmart was formed in 1990 by buying six existing Makro stores, and Walmart completed its purchase of the remaining Massmart shares in November 2020. Walmart's own Africa page describes Makro as part of Massmart's wholesale group together with Cash & Carry and Shield, selling food, liquor and general merchandise to retail, commercial and wholesale customers, and lists 23 Makro retail units in South Africa. Wikipedia counts 46 stores by adding the Makro Liquor outlets. Do not be surprised by either number.

Format is shifting. EWN reported in April 2024 that Massmart would convert four Game stores in malls into smaller Makro outlets of roughly 3,000 square metres, about a quarter of a standard store. Wikipedia says the first was East Point in Boksburg.
