Shoprite Holdings lists Usave among its main brands: Shoprite as the flagship, Usave for low-income shoppers, Checkers for mid-to-high-income shoppers and the OK Franchise division. The group reported 3 639 stores across 10 countries at 30 June 2024 and 3,710 stores across eight countries as of June 2026 in Wikipedia's current text; the difference reflects different dates and reporting scopes. A 2024 report said 22 Usave stores were among the net new openings that year, and another report described Usave as a bright spot in a slowing economy. An older undated profile lists 148 Usave stores, which is too old to treat as current.

These numbers are invented to show the sum. A 2 kg bag of rice at R40 is R20 per kilogram. A 5 kg bag at R85 is R17 per kilogram. The 5 kg bag is cheaper per kilogram, but only if you will use it before it spoils and have the space to store it. A bigger pack is not a saving if half of it is wasted.

Your rights

The Consumer Protection Act expects accurate pricing and fair marketing. If the till price does not match the tag, show the tag and ask for a price check. Keep your slip.

What Shoprite's 2025 and 2026 reporting adds about Usave

Shoprite opened its 500th Usave store in South Africa on 28 August 2025, in Hopefield in the Western Cape, with 534 Usave stores open across southern Africa at that point and more than 6,700 people employed in the format. The announcement said more than 420 Usave products were priced under R10, including several at R5 and the well-known R1 packet of biscuits; a more recent report citing Shoprite's FY2026 annual report (released 9 October 2026) says Usave sells a range of 459 essential products for less than R10. The Ubrand private-label range has grown to over 350 items. Business coverage from March 2026 says Shoprite plans to double its Usave footprint to 1,000 stores. Cabbage was reportedly capped at R12.99 at Usave and R14.99 at Shoprite supermarkets, and a 250 g tub of chicken livers or 400 g of frozen chicken livers was offered for R10.

A cost check using these figures: if a household buys 20 of the sub-R10 items in a month at an average of R8, that is R160. The same items at an assumed R12 each elsewhere would cost R240, a saving of R80, though the R12 is an illustration. Check that the pack sizes are comparable before concluding that Usave is cheaper.
