Checkers Newton Park: An Unconfirmed Listing and Shopping in the Eastern Cape Port City

Quick answer: We found no Checkers address, hours or specials for Newton Park in the sources available, so we state none. Newton Park is a suburb of Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth) in the Eastern Cape, and a Checkers in or near it is plausible, but our searches did not confirm one. Search "Checkers Newton Park" with Gqeberha in a map app, check the Checkers store locator, read recent reviews and phone. Shoprite's results put Checkers at 350 supermarkets in the year to June 2025. Check Sixty60 coverage for your address.

Last updated: October 2026. Our search found no store page for Checkers Newton Park. The store count comes from BusinessTech's coverage of Shoprite's 2025 results as seen in search results. Worked numbers are invented.

Background: Gqeberha retail

Gqeberha is the largest city in the Eastern Cape, with a port, a motor-industry base and a long beachfront. Its suburbs are served by a mix of regional malls and neighbourhood centres, and national chains compete with local independents. The city is known for wind, which affects daily life: a gusty day makes loading a car or carrying bags harder, and it can delay deliveries in exposed areas. Households here often split shopping between a large monthly trip and smaller top-ups.

Newton Park is an older, established suburb with a commercial strip and several schools nearby. Establishments change hands, and a name that used to belong to one shop can be taken over by another. Because our searches found no confirmed Checkers there, treat the listing as a lead to verify, not a fact. Local knowledge from neighbours, schools or workplaces is often more reliable than an old directory entry.

Verifying and planning

Search the map app for Checkers within Gqeberha and zoom to the Newton Park area. Check the locator and sort by distance. Phone the nearest branch and ask: what are your hours, do you have a bakery and butchery, is there a LiquorShop, and does Sixty60 reach my address. If the nearest Checkers is in another suburb, compare it with Pick n Pay, Spar, Woolworths and Shoprite stores nearer to you.

Work out the true cost of the trip. On invented numbers, a monthly basket of R3,200 at a Checkers 8 km away costs R48 in fuel for the round trip at R3 per km. If member savings are R180, the net gain is R132 before counting your time. A closer store with a basket R60 dearer would still win once time and fuel are counted. Delivery changes the arithmetic again: on the 2023 terms Sixty60 offered free delivery on orders over R350, and a R99 monthly plan covered frequent users. Check current fees in the app.

Option (invented)	Net monthly result
Checkers 8 km away, member savings R180, fuel R48	R132 gain before time
Closer store, basket R60 dearer, fuel R12	R48 worse on price, saves time
Delivery, order over R350	No delivery fee on the 2023 terms

Consumer tips and alternatives

Keep your Xtra Savings card in the app. Under the Consumer Protection Act, prices must not mislead and goods must be of good quality; keep slips and raise problems with the manager. In windy weather, secure trolleys and bags, and do not leave doors open while loading.

Beware of scams that use the Checkers name and suburb names to offer vouchers or jobs for fees. Official offers come from the app and group channels. If you cannot confirm a Checkers in Newton Park, choose the nearest verified store and review your choice every few months. Supporting local independent grocers and butchers when their quality and prices are fair also keeps neighbourhood trade alive, and a small basket from them can complement a weekly shop at a chain.

Eastern Cape households also benefit from planning around the region's distances. Gqeberha is spread out, and a journey from one side of the metro to the other can take far longer than the map suggests, especially at school and work peak times. If you need to visit several shops, order them geographically to avoid backtracking. Keep reusable bags in the car, and bring a cooler bag for frozen foods. Look at local butchers, bakeries and fresh-produce sellers, who may offer fair prices and loyal service, and compare their prices with supermarket equivalents before deciding where to buy each category of food.
